This is my very first scratch-built RC Airplane - Extra 300 - built from the plans posted on RCPowers.com. This video gives an overview of all the components and their placement. Thanks to Dave's detailed "how to build" type videos I was able to build this airplane from scratch.

Question by garajustin: If you crash your nitro rc aircraft will the AMA pay for the damages if your insured with them?
Also, if they do can you tell me which of there plans covers the nitro rc plane and how much does it cost?

Just to let you know AMA stands for Academy of Model Aeronautics.

Their website is: www.modelaircraft.org

Answer by Vance
No. AMA's insurance does not cover the Aircraft. The insurance you get is liability insurance for a coverage of 2.5 million dollars. It only covers you in case the aircraft you crashed causes damage to someone else's property or person. The insurance would pay for that damage to the property your aircraft caused, or the hospital bills of the person your aircraft hit. The AMA will also help you with legal help I believe in case of a law suite. This information is on the AMA's website.

WIRED GeekDad Booth Duty
Rc Plane Plans

MakerFaire is Geek Heaven. This TV coverage does a good job of sharing the excitement.

At the GeekDad booth, Erik and I demonstrated the construction of some rockets at different scales… and met many interesting people. The first guy that came up to the booth asked a number of questions, and after a while, he casually mentions that he used to work for Wernher von Braun, the scientist who designed a number of rockets, from the V2 to the Saturn V superbooster that took us to the moon.

Next to us, Chris Anderson (editor in chief of WIRED) showed how to build a quick and dirty UAV, with a RC plane + LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot kit + a cell phone strapped to the belly. The cell phone has GPS so the plane can fly to pre-designated coordinates. The cellular system is the wide-area wireless link. And the built-in camera can take photos of targets of interest.

Trex 500 Electric RC Helicopters

Article by Wahyu Agung Widodo

It's need about 4 hours time to assembly the rc helicopters, but it not include electronics and radio settings. You don't need any more rc model planes plan to build it, because you can get some guides to assemble your Trex 500 rc helicopters. The Trex 500 is electric rc helicopters model, so you don't use a big rc engine in it.InstallationI find the L bolt is very bad, so be carefull to use it, just don't push it to much. In My friend's r c helicopters, at leat there are 3 bolt that bad and very difficult to open it after you use it. About the servo, use JR 3401 because it is fix in the frame, so you don't need to modify the frame again. Just adjust the ESC settings in default, because i feel its enough.I have some trick to modify your Trex 500, here they are :

1. to make easy in your battery assembly and to protect the battery, you can place the Battery Tray down about 1 cm, and add thin foam inside your rc helicopters canopy 2. To make more strong the "swashplate" especially if your rc helicopters got crash, just add adequate CA glue in your RC Helicopters "swashplate" ( be carefull about the bearings, don't put your glue here)

The Maiden FlightIt's good for doing flip and roll with setting your pitch 12. The power is good and maybe like Trex 600 electric rc helicopters, i think it's because there are about 20 to 30 kv in the electric motor used in Trex 500 and Trex 600 . The flight done about 5 minutes, but you can use another battery to more long your flight, such as use FP 3200 or 3300, so you can fly about 6 to 7 minutes

ConclutionsTrex 500 are more stable in flight that Trex 450, and the power performance is more than Trex 600 electric rc helicopters. So i think, prefer to fly Trex 500 electric rc helicopters than Trex 600 electric rc helicopters

It’s strength is its very wide coverage, including small electric, rubber powered, rc pattern, cl combat, ducted fan. Several times a year has a free centerfold full size ff plan.

I’ve been subscribing to Carsten’s Flying Models for a few years now. I really enjoy the FF and C/L coverage as well as radio control. Flying Models covers all aspects of the hobby (aircraft modelling) very evenly, and doesn’t just focus on “flavor of the month” ARF reviews.

Flying Models may cost twice as much as a subscription to Fly RC magazine, but it’s worth five times as much in terms of enjoyment and knowledge gained. Every so often I flip through one of the bigger magazines without coming away with any useful information. I’ve never had that experience with a single issue of Flying Models, which is why it’s my favorite magazine.

I agree with another reviewer that this mag looks very dated on the inside. But it’s articles and tips are great. It not about color photos, but about really giving the complete review or insight. Articles tend to be longer and more in depth that other RC mags. Also it has a lot of info for people who like building as much as flying. If you are only into flying, another mag would be a better choice, but if you like to build and fly and tinker, this is a great choice.

@Pinchodafrog This one is Dupron. But I recommend you build it with EPP. I did not know about EPP when I built this one.

Pinchodafrog @ 9:15 pm #

what type of foam did you use?

theaztbear @ 10:15 pm #

hello you said the plane didnot fly i have the same motor fc-1600 since its cheap
but what the thrust the motor supports
and the current draw using 8*4.3 prop

marhar2 @ 1:01 am #

Thanks for this video… especially nice for a beginner like me, since you show how everything is hooked up and attached. Obviously an engineer! :-)

mbrh77 @ 1:35 am #

You don’t need to use a carbon in the fuselage

danagal79 @ 2:35 am #

@Bucker131Jungmann I agree and much more inboard.

catamaranman333 @ 3:17 am #

great video! You really show all of the mechanical parts and wiring that alot of others leave out. I know a few beginners who have really gotten alot of easy questions answered watching this video. Also great job explaining how you got the wings to go together. In fact, since the RCPowers plans did not explain this well, I chose not to build this plane as my first. If I had seen your video first, I probably would have tried it….thanks alot!

YourFriendlyMe @ 3:17 am #

get the dx7!!

yah1248 @ 3:57 am #

@hermosillad Glad it helped. The servos can be reversed by programming your controller. You need to hook up your controller with the computer using the usb cable and use the tconfig software to reverse the servos. I guess when you say “cable” you mean the usb cable that connects the controller with the computer and you did not buy it. I guess you will have to buy the cable. Makes it a lot easy. The other more intrusive option is to detach the servos and reattach them reversed.

hermosillad @ 3:59 am #

Hello, I also got the electronics from HK, but all the servos were reversed when turned on the radio. Did you experience the same? I did not buy the connection cable (did not know at that time)
I wanted to ask you if had the same problem, and if so, How did you solve it?
By the way, the video was very useful for me, thanks for posting it!

Bucker131Jungmann @ 4:53 am #

You should put your control horns as close to the hinge point of the surface so you can get more throw.
I think, the plane is too heavy to fly.
good luck anyway…

laxguitar50 @ 5:19 am #

just get the plan off of rcpowers

laxguitar50 @ 6:17 am #

your plane is so clean it makes mine look like it wrecked, broke into 20 pieces, and got glued back together. i like to use a 10×7 slow flyer prop it makes it so you can fly at slower speeds and its easier to land. ty for the video

MCPF1 @ 6:56 am #

great cool

yah1248 @ 7:48 am #

Also I use Welder’s Glue to glue EPP pieces together. It is the best glue for EPP. I am not sure if you will be able to get it in India though.

shody129 @ 8:30 am #

sup dude please can u tell me where u live.

mai india, delhi mai rehta hoon aur mujhe yeh bata sakte ho ki aapko epp foam ya depron kitne rupees mai mila?aur apne wings ko main body par kaise attach kiya? please mujhe bata do i really need to know!!

I like the V2… so retro… I wonder if that was my uncle that walked up to you… He worked with Von Braun.

!MimosaMicheMichelle! @ 11:26 am #

Like father like son, like son…
It is a great experience to share.
I hope the tadpoles get a reduced price on their rocket fair.

Todd Huffman @ 11:44 am #

Worked with von Braun!? How fun!

And I love that UAV idea… Should we call it a IUAV (Improvised Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)?
