Top Ten Toys You Can't Be Without in 2009
Article by DeWayne Henry
I bet you're looking for the hottest toys in the world and I have to say 2009 came out with some of the best toys ever. When I do toy reviews and ratings, I'm looking at what a person is going to like about the product and whether or not it will meet their expectations.
It is not easy to find the ultimate toys online, because there is literally hundreds of thousands of toys to choose from and because of that, I end up doing lengthy reviews about the good and the bad of what is currently selling. Many people need a good reviewer, so they don't have to scour the Internet for weeks on end, when they could be more productive doing something else.
Let's jump right into this and get started with my top 10 toys of 2009. You may want to grab a cup of coffee or your favorite soft drink, because this is going to be a roller coaster ride!
Number 1 on the count down goes to Quirkle the boardgame. I believe every family should at least have one boardgame and if you want the boardgame of the year, then I would go with Quirkle! This is a tactical wooden block game, that is loaded with strategy, where you need to use all your creativity to maneuver your colored blocks where they will match both shape and color. You will have hours of fun with this game and you will impress all your friends.
Number 2 goes to New Syma 3 Channel S107 Mini Indoor Co-Axial Metal Body Frame & Built-in Gyroscope RC Remote Controlled Helicopter. This is the best many indoor helicopter on the market and I personally own my share of many helicopters, but this one cannot be beat. If you have a child or an older child that loves helicopters, you will brighten up their day with this amazing gift. The problem I've had with most of the many helicopters on the market is they easily spin out of control, but not this helicopter. This helicopter is easy to maneuver and extremely durable.
Number 3 goes to LEGO Ultimate Building Set - 405 Pieces! If you're poor child has never played with Legos, then your child doesn't know what they're missing. I grew up on Legos and to this day is one of my favorite toys to build with and it is so easy to construct buildings and cars, that even a caveman could do it.
Number 4 is the Spy Net: Secret Mission Video Watch! Now you can turn your kid into a young James Bond (007) with a watch, but is so technologically advanced, that you will be jealous of your child's toy. What's fantastic about this spy watch is that it takes photos and it is a video camera. Here's the really cool part about this watch, it can record a person's voice without them knowing it! What I think young kids will love the most about this watch is the voice changer.
Number 5 is the Crayola Glow Station can create with Light! This is a very cool gift that will entertain any child for hours.
Number 6 is the Scientific Explorer's Mind Blowing Science Kit for Young Scientists. What is more fun than creating your own little laboratory? If your child likes of spaceships and sci-fi movies, then this is the perfect gift, that will keep on giving.
Number 7 is the most popular and highly rated baby toy in the world. It is called the Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether. I have never seen a toy fly off the shelves like this one and it is one of the most talked about toys of 2009!
Number 8 is the FurReal GoGo My Walkin' Pup. If you live in an apartment or you don't want to mess up your beautiful home with a pet, then this is the toy to buy for your child. This walking pup is almost as good as the real thing.
The last two winners are the Nerf N-Strike Stampede ECS and the LEGO Star Wars Snow Trooper Army Pack! I hope my list of the top 10 toys of 2009 will help you make the best decision possible for purchasing Christmas gifts or even birthday gifts.

Firebird Commander 2 RTF Electric
- Anti-Crash Technology (ACT) so learning to fly is easy and safe
- One-box purchase—everything needed to fly comes in the box, including batteries
- Powerful 380 motor enables great climb rate and power
- Two transmitter-selectable flight modes, ACT "on" or "off", so pilots can select the appropriate level of control for their skill level
- Detailed instruction manual and video CD
Nothing as exciting as Anti-Crash Technology (ACT) has happened to entry-level radio-controlled planes since HobbyZone was introduced.
Here’s how it works:
Two sensors on the fuselage, one on the top and one on the bottom, monitor the position of the plane in relation to the ground. When the plane is flying level, the top sensor sees the sky while the bottom sensor sees the ground, and they tell the onboard computer (receiver) that the plane is flying correctly. If the plane

In just under 4 hours, leftover parts were used to make a neat RC airplane as demonstrated in Mr. Herbert's Science Class. It's called "The Junkyard Dog". Using mostly COX airplane parts from models gone by the wayside, I'll show you how I made mine with no plans or a kit. Tired of the noise and mess of my full size airplanes, and since electrics have come a long way, I've become intrigued by them. So needing a break from all the muss and fuss of the full size, gas RC planes, I decided to try to make my own electric plane, with what I learned the hard way over the years. Let's see if I learned anything, and hopefully, if you decide to make one too, you will get some insight from this video. Thanks a lot for watching.

Flying RC Airplanes: How and Why 2.4 GHz Beats Narrowband Radio
Article by Joe W. Bennett
In the old days of flying RC airplanes, when amplitude modulation (AM) was the only method of radio control available, interference with signal transmissions could be caused by any number of things, from another pilot operating on the same frequency, to electrical motors and incoming summer thunderstorms. When flying RC airplanes, signal interference almost always means crashes, and even with the most stringent frequency control measures, crashes not due to pilot error were far too commonplace. In the early '80s, with the introduction of Frequency Modulation (FM) radio systems for RC airplanes and helicopters, the situation was improved somewhat. FM radio rigs lessened the likelihood of extraneous electrical signals causing planes or copters to lockup, but more than one pilot using the same frequency remained a problem.
Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) was the next improvement for fans of flying RC airplanes, and is still the most popular type of narrowband transmission among radio control pilots. PCM radio systems proved a solution to outside interference but did nothing to address the problem of more than one RC radio using the same frequency. Frequency control remains a serious concern for anyone flying RC airplanes with a PCM radio set, as evidenced by the continued demand for frequency checkers and the busy frequency boards at flying fields.
The latest and greatest advancement in radio and frequency control came several years ago, when spread spectrum 2.4 GHz units were first marketed for RC airplanes and helicopters. Spread spectrum is a whole different technology than the narrowband methods of sending signals, and a significant improvement over its predecessors. The most popular and best-tested types of spread spectrum modulation are Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS). Spectrum and JR are major manufacturers of DSSS radios; for FHSS, Futaba's and Airtronics 2.4 units both enjoy good reputations for reliability. Though both have their partisans, in truth one system seems to perform as well as the other--both prevent outside noise from causing glitches and eliminate same-frequency interference, so it's pretty much a "tomato, tomatoh" toss-up as far as a recommendation.
While preventing same-frequency interference and averting unnecessary crashes is the main advantage 2.4 GHz radios hold over narrowbands, there are others worth noting. Because DSSS and FHSSS use less electrical current, RC pilots can enjoy longer flight times, and also extended transmitter and receiver battery life. Whichever brand you go with, Spektrum, Futaba or Airtronics 2.4, you'll be on the cutting edge of radio frequency control technology, at least until the next big innovation comes along.
